SMTP Authentication

What is SMTP Authentication?

SMTP is the protocol used to send e-mail across the Internet.  Normally, SMTP servers only allow clients within their own domain to relay mail through them.  SMTP authentication is a way of allowing people outside of a domain (in our case mail.softsolutions.com) to use our SMTP server when sending e-mail.  Instead of allowing anybody to use our SMTP server to send e-mail, you have to log in with a valid username and password before sending mail.

Follow the instructions below if you are having trouble sending e-mail, or if it takes your e-mail software several attempts before it sends e-mail.  Select your e-mail client from the list below:

  • Go to Tools | Accounts...

  • Click on the Mail tab.

  • Click on the Properties button.

  • Click on the Servers tab.

  • Check the box next to My server requires authentication.

  • Click the Settings button.

  • Select Log on using.

  • In the Account name field, type your username (your username is the first section of your e-mail address e.g. fred@softsolutions.com, username=fred).

  • In the Password field, type in your password.

  • Check the box next to Remember password if you would like your password to be saved.
