Disabling Window Messenger Service

Windows 2000 and XP machines have a built-in feature called "Windows Messenger" that  allows anyone on the Internet to pop up windows on your screen.  Should a pop up box appear on your screen with the words "Messenger Service" in the title bar (see example below), chances are that you have Windows Messenger Services enabled.

To remove the ability for anyone in the world to pop up messages on your computer, we recommend that you disable the Messenger service.

Widows 2000

  • Click Start-> Settings-> Control Panel-> Administrative Tools->Services

  • Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"

  • Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties

  • Click the STOP button.

  • Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar

  • Click OK

Windows XP Home

  • Click Start->Control Panel

  • Click Administrative Tools

  • Double click Services Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"

  • Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties

  • Click the STOP button

  • Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar

  • Click Administrative Tools
