Configuring an FTP client to publish your website

The process by which files are transferred to our server is called FTP (File Transfer Protocol).  The following instructions will guide you trough the steps of publishing your website (or updating it) using  an FTP program.

NOTE: If you are using FrontPage, you should NEVER use regular FTP to upload your files. This will damage the extensions.  Stick with one or the other at all times.

WS_FTP Instructions

If you don't have an FTP program, click here to download a free copy of WS_FTP LE.

  • Open your FTP program.
  • A Session Profile window will be displayed.

A profile contains the information needed to connect to your website. Creating a profile now will eliminate the need for you to configure the software each time you wish to connect to the web server via FTP.

  • To create a profile, click the New button and enter a generic profile name at the top of the Session Profile window, such as "My Website".
  • Enter your domain name next to Host Name/Address: (yourdomain.com).
  • Type your User ID (username@yourdomain.com) and Password for your website in the spaces provided as illustrated below.

  • Click the Startup tab.

  • Set your Initial Remote Site Folder to be /www/htdocs and specify the location of your website on your local machine in the Initial Local Folder field, as illustrated below.

  • Click OK to connect.

You are now connected to the server.  WS_FTP will display a split screen where files on the left side are within your own computer and files on the right side are within the server, as illustrated below.

NOTE:  As a general rule, all files that you upload, other than images such as .gif's and .jpg's, will be uploaded in ASCII mode.  Images and programs such as .exe's will need to be uploaded in Binary mode.  If you upload a file and you can't view it or run it properly, you may want to try uploading it in the other format and try again.

  • To upload a file, navigate to where you want to upload it on the remote system (right hand column) by double-clicking on the folder icons until you are in the folder where you want the file located on your website.

  • Select the file(s) on the left column (local machine) to be uploaded.  If you want to select several files to upload, hold the CTRL key down and select all the files you wish to upload.  The same can be done for folders if you want to move the entire contents of a folder to your website.

  • Click on the arrow pointing to the right (-->) to upload the selected files/folders to the server.
