UDC Telephone Devices

What is a UDC?

It's a device used by Qwest to give you a second phone line without using a second pair of copper wires (great for them, but not for you if you want to use a modem on those lines).  The problem is that when they "split" the copper wires to run two lines on one pair it makes both lines inadequate for handling data.

Common problems experienced with a UDC installed:

  • Poor / slow connection speeds
  • Makes 56K modem connections impossible
  • Excessive re-training of the modems
  • Frequent disconnects
  • Frequent latency problems (pauses during a download)

If you are regularly having trouble getting good modem connections to the Internet and you have more than one phone line in your house , you may have a UDC device that's slowing things down. UDC.jpg (18612 bytes)

One way to Check if you have a UDC device is to locate the telephone box outside your home.   If there is a hump or ridge on the right side of your telephone box (as shown in this photo) then you likey have a UDC.

If you box doesn't look like this but you have more than one phone line in your house it is still possible that you have a UDC in a different style box. The only sure way to know is to ask the phone company.

Qwest will often say that they are under no obligation to remove the UDC but the Public Service Commission says differently.  If you call them, they tell Qwest to remove it.

The first thing to do is to contact  Qwest Residential Repair at 1-800-573-1311 and request that the UDC be taken off (give them a chance to take care of you without bringing the Public Service Commission into it).

If calling Qwest doesn't work, then call the Public Service Commission at 530-6716.
